European green light for ABC Ottmarsheim

LAT Nitrogen, a leading European provider of nitrogen-based products in the fertilizer and industrial chemical market, is proud to announce that the European Commission has officially approved, under EU state aid rules, MEUR 144 million in French funding to support its ABC Ottmarsheim project.

This strategic funding will accelerate the production of carbon-free hydrogen for the fertiliser sector, marking a key milestone in Europe’s energy transition.

The ABC Ottmarsheim project involves the installation and operation of a 50 MW renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production unit. This state-of-the-art facility will be located on the company’s site in Ottmarsheim in the Ottmarsheim-Chalampé industrial zone in France (Haut-Rhin).

A significant environmental impact for the industry

This initiative will make a decisive contribution to the decarbonisation of the ammonia production process. By replacing up to 15% of the hydrogen currently produced from fossil fuels with renewable, low-carbon hydrogen, the ABC Ottmarsheim project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70% compared to traditional methods. 6,600 tonnes of low-carbon, renewable hydrogen produced by a 50 MW electrolyser will enable the annual production of 36,000 tonnes of carbon-free ammonia.

This will prevent more than 46,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, representing a giant leap towards a more sustainable future. State aid, in the form of a direct grant, will cover part of the necessary investment costs, including the construction of the electrolyser and associated infrastructure. The culmination of a strong partnership between two industrial players

Leo Alders, CEO of LAT Nitrogen: “This project marks a decisive step in our journey to transform LAT Nitrogen’s production footprint. Integrating renewable hydrogen is essential to reducing the CO₂ intensity of ammonia, the foundation of sustainable fertilizer production and a resilient European food system. Our collaboration with Hynamics accelerates our sustainability ambitions, boosts innovation, and strengthens our competitiveness at a time when our industry is undergoing profound transformation. With the subsidies granted we are taking an important step forward in the final project financing.

Christelle Rouillé, CEO of Hynamics: “The support from the French government and the European Union for the ABC Ottmarsheim project demonstrates the importance of these innovative investments in furthering the energy transition and our country’s energy sovereignty. With this project, Hynamics is taking a new step forward in its development by producing low-carbon, renewable hydrogen using a high-capacity electrolyser. We are providing our client with a robust solution to support their transition towards decarbonising their operations. I am proud of the commitment shown by our teams working on this project. The relationship of trust we have built with our partner LAT Nitrogen is a guarantee of success.

European recognition and strategic alignment The European Commission’s approval underscores the importance of the ABC Ottmarsheim project. It has recognised that the French measure promotes the development of a strategic economic activity, essential to the energy transition and the EU’s climate objectives, notably the EU Hydrogen Strategy and the Renewable Energy Directive, which set ambitious targets for the incorporation of renewable hydrogen into industry.

The approved subsidies constitute a key milestone for the investment decision; nevertheless, the project will be fully approved until OPEX sustainability is ensured, either via additional funding or adequate market demand for green products.
